National Training Center – July Members of the Month

The National Training Center’s Members of the Month are David, Eleanor, Frank, Gene and Norval. Our staff and members here feel they are the most deserving candidates because of their efforts and commitment to living an active lifestyle. Great job!

Each one of our July Members of the Month is over 90 years old, and they all have incredible advice and stories about their fitness journeys. This group of members has been coming to the National Training Center since it first opened or joined soon after. When asked about fitness advice, their answers all steamed around how important it is to be consistent and staying active. Check out some of their other answers below!

Interview

What’s a fun fact about yourself?

“I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro at 66 – 20 years older than the next oldest member of the climb. The guides had my name circled in red. I made it to the top when some of the younger ones did not” – Gene

“I still can laugh at myself” – David

What’s your proudest achievement?

“Doing the half marathon two years in a row in my mid-eighties about ten years ago.” – Frank

“Won my last National Championship (U.S. National Senior Games) in basketball at age 80. Also, in February of 1945, in a hotly contested basketball game (Clermont vs. Montverde) I scored all of my teams points.” – Gene

While Eleanor stated, “being a mother!”

“Keeping fit at 92, and exercising at 92!” – Norval

Anything else you’d like to tell us about yourself?

“Participated in Senior Games 3 on 3 basketball until age 87. The team won 4 National Championships. I also played slow pitch softball until age 87 and coached that sport 3 more years.” – Norval

“I am so grateful for my family, my friends, and my health. Even after heart failure, leukemia, scarlet fever and 2 broken arms!” – Eleanor

“Served my country in WW2. I have a great, supportive family.” – David

“I’m 95 years old, still live alone and still able to drive. I have 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. I take things one date at a time and live like every day is my last” – Frank

Congratulations to our members of the month. You all are a true inspiration to us here at the National Training Center!
